|a An experimental field study was conducted to evaluate the effects of pre-school training and social work services on reading readiness, social maturity and family dysfunction among children whose parents receive public assistance. The study assumes a poverty cycle model as a theoretical motivation to investigate whether disadvantaged children can be better prepared to compete with their more advantaged peers during early school years. The training technology is based on Moore's Autotelic Responsive Environments with a computer based delivery system. The impact of social work services was tested by creating differentials in the level of services provided to the children and their families.
