Too often, the response of the Catholic Church to Nazi treatment of Jews is viewed separately from the Church's response to Nazi treatment of Catholics. Scholars must break down this artificial separation. The last weeks of March and first weeks of April 1933 make painfully clear that the Catholic Church's decisions and responses to persecution of their own co-religionists influenced and affected their tepid response to mistreatment of Jews. Both must be studied together for the most nuanced and truthful scholarship on the church during these years. The ethic of reciprocity -or the lack of it - lies at the center of the Holocaust.¹ Edith Stein understood this when as early as April 1933, long before the Nazis and their allies and collaborators murdered six million Jews and millions of others, she wrote about »love of neighbor,« and the enormous cost to universal Catholicism should the ethic of reciprocity be ignored. Today, as scholars and Catholics struggle still over how to understand the role of the Catholic Church during the Nazi period, we are haunted by Edith Stein's words. Catholic responses to the April 1933 anti-Jewish laws embody the complexities of the Catholic conscience under the assault of Nazism: a willingness to fight for the church but not for perceived outsiders. Father Scharnagl's response, dutifully noting the plight of Jews but more focused on the plight of co-religionists, is hardly surprising, but letters like those written by the anonymous woman from Düsseldorf remind us that to think more broadly was possible.
