520 |a The Soviet Union's collapse brought economic uncertainty to many Ukrainians. Approximately 20 percent of the population, 10 million people, currently survive on incomes below the state-set subsistence minimum figure. Given the unrealistic nature of this state-produced definition, "poverty" levels are in reality much higher. A distinctive feature of this marginalization is its longevity, as seventeen years since the dismantling of the command economy relatively few feel the benefits of marketization. As Burawoy (2001) noted, the very fact that few people have starved to death during this period indicates that other economic practices must be in operation to ensure households survive. Therefore, there is a need to explore how people (re) structure their everyday lives in response to economic marginalization. Revealing such practices demonstrates the multiplicity of forms that economic marginalization can take, the relationships between formal and informal economies, the exploitation of marginalized groups, new spaces of resistance, and the potential impact of state reforms. Although there is an emerging literature qualitatively exploring the coping tactics developed as in response to economic marginalization, there has been little qualitative examination of the role that domestically produced food plays within this broad spectrum of practices. Aproximadamente el 20 por ciento de la población, es decir, 10 millones de personas, sobreviven actualmente con ingresos por debajo del guarismo mínimo de subsistencia definido por el Estado. Dada la irreal naturaleza de la definición estatal, los niveles de "pobreza" en realidad son más altos. Un rasgo distintivo de esta marginalización es su longevidad, en cuanto que después de diecisiete años del desmantelamiento de la economía controlada relativamente muy pocos sienten los beneficios de la mercadización. Como nota Burawoy (2001), el propio hecho de que nadie haya perecido de hambre durante este período indica que otras prácticas económicas deben estar operando para permitir que los hogares sobrevivan. Es necesario, en consecuencia, explorar cómo la gente (re)estructura sus vidas cotidianas en respuesta a la marginalización económica. Al revelar tales prácticas se demuestra la multiplicidad de formas que puede adoptar la marginalización, las relaciones entre la economía formal y la informal, la explotación de grupos marginados, nuevos espacios de resistencia y el impacto potencial de las reformas estatales. Aunque existe una literatura emergente que explora cualitativamente las tácticas desarrolladas para responder a la marginalización económica, poco ha sido el examen cualitativo sobre el papel que juegan los alimentos producidos domésticamente dentro de este amplio espectro de prácticas. Este artículo empieza a llenar este vacío explorando los diferentes papeles que juega en la vida cotidiana la dacha, un lote de tierra rural que se entregó a los hogares durante el período soviético.
