The present article provides a detailed account of the organization of the course that Gilroy developed. The class noted how the initial enthusiasm of the French writers for what appeared to be a new era of freedom and justice eventually gave way to disillusionment, anger, and even protest against the violence and tyranny of the new radical regime. They persisted in affirming the principles of reasoned moderation as well as human dignity and compassion.
