In Heuss' Briefwechsel mit den Bürgern werden wichtige Themen der Nachkriegsgesellschaft zwischen Zusammenbruch und Wiederaufbau, Restauration und Neubeginn sichtbar. Heuss verfasste seine Briefe individuell und freundlich im Ton, oftmals voller Humor, bisweilen aber auch belehrend oder kämpferisch. Die Schreiben gewähren Einblicke in das Amtsverständnis von Heuss, der damit beispielhaft auf seine Nachfolger wirkte. Präsentiert werden die Briefe aus der Bevölkerung und Heuss' Antwortschreiben Der Briefwechsel bietet Einblicke in die deutsche Nachkriegsgesellschaft im politischen Dialog zwischen Bevölkerung und dem ersten Bundespräsidenten.
