Priestland, der an der Universität Oxford "Neuere Geschichte" lehrt, zeichnet Aufstieg und Fall des Kommunismus nach und arbeitet dessen Varianten zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten und auf den verschiedenen Kontinenten heraus (IBM) eine gut lesbare Ideengeschichte des Kommunismus.
