Zusammenfassung:Abstract: This article discusses the findings of 'History and Civics Textbooks in CIS States', a project sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation. It includes the observation that, despite its claims of focusing on the future, certain old cultural patterns (e.g. essentialism) have been preserved in Communism. These patterns continue to characterise history culture and history discourses in today's CIS states and can lead to confusion in international dialogue. This is made worse by the western world's ignorance of the culture and history of individual CIS countries, as exemplified by an analysis of the Ukraine's (non-)presence in German history textbooks. This prompted the recommendations for further textbook work with partners from CIS countries.
