Die Einrichtung der Tierparks, ihre architektonische Gestaltung, Auswahl und Haltung der Tiere sind Ausdruck der Einstellungen ihnen gegenüber und kennzeichnen die Beziehungen des Menschen zu seiner natürlichen Umgebung im allgemeinen und zur Fauna im besonderen. Der Besitz und die Zurschaustellung fremder Tiere folgte unterschiedlichen Interessen, Wertvorstellungen und Zielen, abhängig vom Zeitgeist, der gesellschaftlich-politischen Situation und den naturwissenschaftlichen Ambitionen.
