|a With the deconstruction of feudalism since Susan Reynolds' fundamental criticism in 1994, the very structures that were considered to be the specific features of the epoch of the Middle Ages were questioned. The functions of the early medieval order in particular are fundamentally under discussion. In this discussion, the present volume provides a new design for an area that historians have always regarded as the central location of socio-political orders of the early Middle Ages: the military organization. Specifically, it is aimed at the Carolingian world of the decades around 800, which was considered the origin of fiefdom. Because despite the central position that the war held in her, no new model could be established after the feudalism debate. In research, two - apparently - incompatible models of the Carolingian military organization are currently represented in parallel, which are outlined with the catchwords of "conscription" (Bachrach) and "war band" (Reuter)
