|a Das Eichsfeld war ein politisches Ausnahmegebiet in der DDR, das die SED-Diktatur vor besondere Herausforderungen stellte, ja bis an den Rand der Verzweiflung trieb. Um die Einflusssphäre der katholischen Kirche zurückzudrängen und in der industriearmen Region die soziale, wirtschaftliche, aber auch kulturelle Infrastruktur auszubauen, beschloss die Partei 1959 den »Eichsfeldplan«. Aus der katholischen Hochburg sollte eine sozialistische Industrieregion werden. Christian Stöber bilanziert die Eichsfeldpolitik der SED, aber auch die gesellschaftlichen Reaktionen und Wechselwirkungen - und zeigt, wie sich das katholische Milieu mit missmutiger Anpassung, Eigensinn und weltanschaulicher Verweigerung gegenüber den staatsparteilichen Drangsalierungen und Repressionen erfolgreich zu behaupten wusste.
