Rezension: Die Autoren bezeichnen ihr Buch als Kaleidoskop des "furchtbaren Jahres ... das wohl ewig die schrecklichste Jahreszahl der deutschen Geschichte bleiben" wird (Harry Graf Kessler). Darin sind Briefe, Befehle, Tagebucheinträge, Auszüge aus Dokumenten, Plakate und Fotos versammelt. Diese Kompilation ist nach den Jahreszeiten geordnet: Das Frühjahr der Hoffnungen, der Sommer der Enttäuschungen, der Herbst der Niederlage und der Winter der Revolution. Am Ende folgen Sebastian Haffners Erinnerungen an dieses Jahr und eine Art Nachwort. Die Auswahl führt vor, wie alle Bevölkerungsschichten, vom Soldaten im Graben bis zur Generalitätsebene, von der Krankenschwester bis zum Professor vom Krieg betroffen waren. Einige der Zitate sind erschütternd, insbesondere, wenn der Frontalltag beschrieben wird, andere analysieren von heute aus gesehen sehr treffend die Lage. Die Kapitel werden durch eine Chronologie eingeleitet und die Autorinnen und Autoren der verwendeten Texte in Kurzbiografien vorgestellt. Ein Register erschliesst das Buch. Sehr gut für Schulen geeignet. (2-3 S)
