Der Aufsatz umreißt zunächst wesentliche Konzeptionen und Narrative – antike wie moderne –, um dann einige vielleicht halbwegs zu erhärtende Züge der frühen römischen Monarchie herauszustellen. Dabei sind verschiedene methodische Pfade zu beschreiten, unter anderem die Kritik der überlieferten Erzählungen, der Blick auf den italischen und aristokratischen Kontext des 7. bis 5. Jahrhunderts, die Auswertung der archäologischen und urbanistischen Befunde sowie das Durchspielen verschiedener Entwicklungsmodelle. Bereits die antike Überlieferung betont, wie wenig institutionalisiert dieses Königtum war, obgleich es zur Ausbildung von Staatlichkeit im frühen Rom offenbar wesentlich beitrug. Die „Könige“ waren offenbar eher warlords mit Gefolgschaften, die in verschiedenen Konstellationen Stadtherrschaften unterschiedlichen Zuschnitts etablieren konnten. Auch nachdem sich in Rom kein Einzelherrscher mehr auf längere Zeit etablieren konnte, dauerte die fluide, experimentelle Gestaltung der Position an der Spitze bis zur Schaffung des Doppelkonsulats im Jahr 367 v. Chr. fort. Mochte freilich das frührömische Königtum im typologischen Vergleich antiker Monarchien auch ein Nebengleis darstellen, so wirkte es doch in den späteren Prozessen der Konstruktion und Tradition von historisch-politischer Identität stark nach. Es stellte ferner einige wichtige Weichen für den Fortgang der römischen Geschichte bis hin zur Etablierung einer neuen Monarchie. 
520 |a Abstract Since the historical tradition on early Roman kingship is unreliable, scholarship often disregards the first stage of Roman statehood or gives a very specialistic treatment. First of all the paper sketches important concepts and narratives of ancient tradition as well as of modern research. Then some main features of early Roman monarchy which to some extent might be made plausible are outlined. Different methodological paths to be taken include traditional source criticism as well as looking at Italian and aristocratic contexts, archaeological and urbanistic records from seventh to fifth century B. C., and giving different models of evolution some thoughts. Ancient tradition already suggests how far away from being a fixed institution kingship from Romulus to Tarquinius Superbus was, although it obviously contributed a lot to the development of early Roman statehood. The „kings“ rather resembled warlords; together with their followers these were able to establish different kinds of rule in different mixtures of power and opportunity. Even after setting up a republican order which precluded one man rule the Roman aristocracy experimented on some options for the highest magistrate, until dual consulship was created in 367 B. C. Typologically compared with other monarchies in antiquity early Roman kingship might be a sort of tributary. But for the Romans it had a long lasting impact on constructing and handing down their historical and political identity. In addition it pointed the way for the further process of Roman history until another monarchy was established.
