|a ABSTRACT Whether the Middle Ages has or might have a place in the new global history is currently being discussed by the international historical profession, but only for the second half of the period. Looking at the aspects of the formation of empire, migrations and long-distance trade, the question might also be posed for Charlemagne and his era. It transpires that Charlemagne concentrated so intently on building his European empire that he conceded no living space to foreigners - in contrast to others - under his rule; he did, however, promote the settlement of Latin monks and nuns in the Holy Land, thereby leaving them vulnerable to the Caliphate and other Muslim powers as well as to the aggressions of Orthodox Greeks. With his support for the Christians in Asia and Africa, Charlemagne gained a connection with the tri-continental ecumenism of the Muslim umma; his motivation was rooted in the Great Commission of Christianity, which, unlike the rules of Islam, consists of the specific commandment to seek out all the nations. This Christian tendency to cross borders, however, still constitutes the original model for the present-day practice of globalization.
