|a Used as a swearword by National Socialists, the term “intellectual” had to be painstakingly rehabilitated after 1945 and defended against attacks from both the political left and right. This process can be observed in articles appearing in the magazine Der Ruf and in early contributions by the Gruppe 47, which shaped the concept of the stalwart intellectual and brought forth influential intellectuals like Grass, Böll and Walser.
