|a The anonymous innkeeper in Lessing's drama Minna von Barnhelm is part of a long tradition of comic and at the same time parabatically speaking figures. Up to now, research has largely ignored him, although he opens up interesting dimensions of reading and could even be interpreted as a ›key character‹. While on the surface he appears to fill dramatic gaps with his proclivity for transgression and meta-drama, he also raises fundamental questions of text interpretation, serving as an allegory for both the public and the implicit author. This informer would have barely containable power over his guests if he were able to do more than just collect information and could understand «actual connections«. Poetologically seen, this representative of his caste anticipates Romantic irony.
