|a Climatic changes induce several types of abiotic stresses affecting plants in many regions worldwide. These stresses include extreme temperatures, drought, salinity, heavy metals and inadequate nutrition resulting in reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction causing damage in cellular membranes impairing photosynthesis and crop yield. Application of beneficial elements silicon (Si), selenium (Se) and cobalt (Co) can be a good strategy to scavenge ROS overproduction in plant tissues especially in chloroplasts. Generally, application of Si vial soil, Se via foliar and Co via seed treatment at a variety of rates and sources boosts enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase) and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense system (carotenoids, phenols, ascorbic acid, glycine-betaine and proline) scavenging ROS to keep plant cell homeostasis. In addition, beneficial elements application at low concentration also improves plant osmotic potential, photoassimilates (sugars, amino acids, proteins and hormones) transportation in the phloem to the sink tissues resulting in higher crop yields under different environmental conditions. In this review, we summarize recent advance in agronomical practices using sources, doses and methods of application of beneficial elements to mitigate abiotic stresses increasing nutritional aspects of edible crops by agronomic biofortification. In this context, this review brings powerful information regarding fertilizer management to alleviate deleterious effects caused by environmental conditions for better crop yield and nutritional food quality
