520 |a Postharvest pears are vulnerable to fungal diseases, which leads to a decline in fruit quality and economic losses. This research objective was to assess the effectiveness and underlying mechanisms of Yarrowia lipolytica (Y. lipolytica) on the biocontrol of postharvest blue mold of pears. The findings indicated that treatment with Y. lipolytica markedly diminished decay level in pears compared to the control group. Further findings showed that Y. lipolytica might form biofilms, inhibit the hyphal expansion of Penicillium expansum (P. expansum) on PDA plates, suppress germination of spores and extension of germ tube, and restrict the growth of P. expansum through volatile compounds. Treatment with Y. lipolytica also enhanced the activity of the enzymes and the expression level of the genes associated with disease defense in pears, indicating an activated defensive response. Additionally, Y. lipolytica-treated pears exhibited increased levels of resistant compounds like total phenolics and flavonoids. These pears showed higher antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging ability than the control group, as indicated by increased activity and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes, decreased hydrogen peroxide content, lower superoxide anion production rate, and reduced MDA content. The effectiveness of Y. lipolytica in combating blue mold in pears provides vital insights into environmentally friendly and safe fungal disease control. Nevertheless, additional research is required to assess its practical efficacy in agricultural applications
