Zusammenfassung: | Thick-walled, oil-filled akinetes of the green alga Spongiochloris typica, long in the stationary phase of growth, were transferred to fresh media. Ultra-structural changes were observed during a 51-hr period after transfer. Akinetes, when transferred to fresh media, may follow 1 of 3 pathways: 1 Remain unchanged; these cells appear to be moribund perhaps due to an over-accumulation of lipid. 2 Undergo immediate zoosporogenesis; seems to occur in cells with 4, 8, or more nuclei. 3 Return to the vegetative state; this was common in smaller cells with less than 4 nuclei; however, zoosporogenesis eventually did occur when 4, 8, or more nuclei were present |
