With an emphasis on early intervention, they provide an important preventive service provided by all local authorities. As part of the promotion of child well-being, the Practice Guidance has identified a number of key foci for these centres. One is the promotion of mental health in both parents and children. Maternal depression is known to be a significant factor in other social care settings, one associated with impediments to child well-being. This research note focuses on the rate of depression in children's centres, and associated parenting stress and psycho-social problems. The findings show parental depression to be a feature of a significant minority of service users, and that parenting stress and psycho-social problems are significantly greater amongst this depressed group. The significance of these findings for practice is discussed.
