It outlines del Paso's use of, inter alia, irony and guilt by association as his principal means of discrediting the protagonists Carlota and Maximiliano, incorporating the views of several individual critics into a single analysis of the novel's rhetorical strategies. From this, it is argued not only that postmodern interpretations of the novel are untenable, but that the novel's closing chapters are aesthetically unconvincing, contra the assessment of one recent critic.
