Zusammenfassung:ABSTRACT. This paper sets out a brief history of the Portuguese villancicos and discusses the poetic-musical genre fashionable in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, associated with certain feasts. It can be considered that the villancico formed part of a performance, and was frequently used to transmit religious messages. A comparison is drawn between the Vilancicos de Corpus Christi de 1647 and other villancicos which form part of the Barbosa Machado Collection. This paper focuses on the Corpus Christi villancicos, the only existing Portuguese villancicos written for this festival. They simultaneously celebrate the Eucharist, the Portuguese Restoration in 1640 and D. João IV being saved from an attack in 1646. KEYWORDS. Villancicos, Corpus Christi, Portuguese Restoration.
