Miller's own writings on tragedy are critically examined against a backdrop of tragic theory, and a new vision of Miller's use of tragedy in this play emerges. Rigid definitions of tragedy are eschewed in favor of rich descriptions. Critical issues include the "size" of the action, the moral stature of the central character, the magnitude of the loss, and the dimensions of the tragic vision. This essay argues that the production's use of the chorus in the play leads us to a profoundly shocking experience, which both breaks the heart and expands it, exalting the vision the tragic experience releases at the bitter end of this production.
