In questo saggio prendiamo in considerazione la nota obiezione di Fine alla caratterizzazione modale dell'essenza. Sosteniamo che è possibile conservare l'approccio modale nonostante i controesempi di Fine sviluppando una teoria dei qua-oggetti. In questa teoria il nesso di predicazione è analizzato in maniera più profonda e la confutazione dei controesempi è ottenuta mediante una visione dell'essenza stratificata.
