520 |a In 2003 Mitchell and Tucker published theRevised Checklist of New York State Plants, Edition IV, which was the most recent published checklist of the vascular plants that occur outside of cultivation in New York State. Since that publication much new research and botanical explorations have added to our understanding of this flora. To account for this new information as well as to review previous assessments of the flora, a new list of all vascular plant species, infraspecific taxa above the rank of form, and hybrids that occur or occurred in the recent past outside of cultivation in New York State is presented here. This list is primarily based on a review of the literature and herbarium studies. The list contains scientific names, common names, synonyms, nativity status, nonnative status, state ranks for rarities, and voucher information. The taxonomy and nomenclature of the online New York Flora Atlas will be aligned with this list. In addition to the accepted list, a list of taxa that are excluded from the flora (excluded list) and a list of taxa that very likely occur, should occur, or may soon occur in the state (expected list) are presented. Three thousand five hundred twenty-four species, 134 additional infraspecific taxa, and 264 hybrids are reported from outside of cultivation within the state. One thousand nine hundred ninety-three of the species are native, 1490 (43%) are nonnative, and 41 are of unknown nativity. Not counting not naturalized nonnative species, the percentage of nonnative species in the flora is somewhere between 27 and 33%. Of the 1993 native species, 678 (34%) are listed as rarities in the 2017 New York Rare Plant Status Lists. Of the 1490 nonnative species, 726 are naturalized, 515 are not naturalized, and 249 have an unknown nonnative status. Five hundred species, 98 additional infraspecific taxa, and 160 hybrids are excluded from the flora. Compared with Mitchell and Tucker’s 2003 list, the current list has 227 more species, 33 fewer additional infraspecific taxa, and 71 more hybrids. A closer comparison of the two lists reveals that, not counting different concepts of taxa, 162 species, additional infraspecific taxa, and hybrids (minimum-rank taxa) that Mitchell and Tucker (2003) reported to occur in the state are excluded, and 364 minimum-rank taxa that Mitchell and Tucker (2003) did not include are added. Of these 364 new additions, 95 are native, 263 are nonnative, and six are of unknown nativity. Of the 263 nonnative additions, 49 are naturalized, 163 are not naturalized, and 51 have an unknown nonnative status. The differences between this and previous assessments of the flora are in part the result of a changing flora but are also the result of discoveries made in herbaria of specimens collected long ago and taxonomic revisions.
