It moves beyond previous approaches that have been structured around the issues of ‘authorship’ or the ‘originality’ of the text. It discards the modern assumptions upon which the questions of authorship and authenticity are built and move toward an analysis of the text using a comparative approach. This study places the text in the framework of other medieval Specula originating both from the Byzantine world and from Western Christendom clarifying the place of this sixteenth-century work within the frame of the literary genre to which it belongs.
