Zusammenfassung:As part of a modern, thematic, attempt at interpreting the Qur'an, this article emphasizes the peace verses' sociopolitical implications. It argues that Qur'an 8:61-62 elevates the status of peace over that of war with respect to all generations, and thus, rejects the theory that the peace verses were abrogated. It also contends that Muslims should see peace as the "rule" and the only option if they want to play their role properly as part of God's viceroys on Earth (Q, 2: 30). Finally, this study concludes that the Qur'anic weltanschauung on humanity and religion proves that the phenomenon of collective, combat jihad was an interim necessity, the incumbency of which expired upon Islam's maturity, thus, upholding the perpetuity and relevance of the peace verses.
