|a This essay explores the work of the Japanese painter Kazuki Yasuo (1911–1974), who was captured by Soviet forces at the end of World War II and spent eighteen months in a series of labor camps in Siberia. Particular emphasis is given to the link between image and word that emerged in his work as Kazuki struggled to come to terms with his memories of captivity.
