These issues include imitation, copying, and the significance of detail, as they were discussed in sources dating from the mid-seventeenth century (with particular emphasis on the nineteenth century). Also considered are historiographic factors which may inform views of the parameters of 'Realism' in Russian art. A consideration of primary textual sources dating before the mid century examines how such visual issues were discussed in aesthetic as well as ideological terms, before the advent of a more prominent, readily politicized 'Realism' from the 1870s onwards.
