Reflections of Heresy in Czech Fourteenth- and Fifteenth-Century Rhymed Compositions

Although heresy in the Bohemian lands was condemned by the bull of Innocent IV as early as 1244, the earliest mentions of heresy in Bohemia in Czech vernacular literature appear in the so-called Dalimil Chronicle written in rhymed verse about 1314. 520 |a Although heresy in the Bohemian lands was condemned by the bull of Innocent IV as early as 1244, the earliest mentions of heresy in Bohemia in Czech vernacular literature appear in the so-called Dalimil Chronicle written in rhymed verse about 1314. At the same time rhymed satires and disputes, although not explicitly heretical, verge on heresy with their attacks on the clergy and even the pope. Complete rejection of the contemporary Church and open propagation of Hussite heresies is expressed in compositions written after 1420, and these are condemned in much livelier Roman-Catholic works, some of which show the humour which lacks in the pro-Hussite works. After the compromise reached at the Council of Basle in 1434 and the establishment of the Utraquist Church, both the Roman and Utraquist rhymed compositions condemn the alleged heresies of the Unitas Fratrum.
