The analysis commenced with the first pollen-bearing deposits dating from c. 12500 b.p. (radiocarbon years) which show an open grass-dominated vegetation. This is followed by a herb-dominated phase coincident with inorganic deposition in the lake, marking the cold period of the Nahanagan Stadial. The end of the Late-glacial is marked by a particularly clear succession from a grass-Rumex phase, through a brief Empetrum phase to a phase dominated by Juniperus with some Filipendula. This leads gradually into the usual early Post-glacial Betula maximum. The detail in which these changes can be seen may be due to a delay in the expansion of birch at the altitude of this site. The Post-glacial changes now follow the well-established pattern with minor differences reflecting the altitude and westerly situation of the site. The effects of man are first seen at c. 4780 b.p. and become progressively more important from that time on. The present bog surface is still active and is now one of the very few undisturbed raised bogs anywhere in Ireland.
