|a This article presents a critical reading of the short untitled saga about King Niall Frossach (d. 778) that survives in the Book of Leinster. The discussion focuses on the seemingly unique combination of motifs that makes up the narrative, especially the Act of Truth and the release of ascetic heat. This odd combination of regal and saintly motifs is designed to paint a flattering picture of Niall, a righteous, yet austere, ruler who represents the very epitome of Christian kingship.
