520 |a The percomorph suborder Stromateoidei is characterized internally by toothed pharyngeal sacs behind the last gill arch, and externally by small pores on the body and head, deciduous scales, small anal spines not distinct from the rays, an enlarged lacrimal bone covering much of the upper jaw, and small uniserial jaw teeth. The Nomeidae possess 2 dorsal fins, the first with about 10 thin spines, persistent pelvic fins, and more than 25 vertebrae. Cubiceps (Mandelichthys) athenae n. sp., the first of its subgenus in the Atlantic Ocean, has fewer dorsal fin rays and a longer head and pectoral fin than its nearest relative, the Western Pacific C. pauciradiatus.
