A New Gobioid Fish, Microdesmus lanceolatus, from the Gulf of Mexico with Notes on M. longipinnis (Weymouth)

A new species of Microdesmidae is described from off the coast of Louisiana. Morphological variation in M. longipinnis, the only known congener in the Gulf of Mexico, is illustrated. A key is given to the Atlantic species. Additional evidence is presented to establish the family among the gobioid fi...

A key is given to the Atlantic species. Additional evidence is presented to establish the family among the gobioid fishes rather than among the blennoids with which it has usually been associated. Inclusion of the genus in the Gunnelichthyidae is considered untenable and the present family name should persist.
