Zusammenfassung: | A review of Bajacalifornia indicates that there are four nominal species, including a new one described herein, and at least one additional, as yet, unnamed form. A key that relies on meristics is presented. Problems with nomenclature relating to the types of B. arcylepis sp. nov., B. drakei, B. erimoensis and B. megalops are tentatively resolved. Changes in head morphology in larger specimens are not as dramatic as those documented for Narcetes stomias, but are shown to occur and used to justify placement of B. erimoensis (type: 320 mm SL) in the synonymy of B. megalops (type: 60.5 mm SL). The identity of the holotype of B. drakei is tentatively resolved on the basis of myomere counts of similar size specimens from near the type locality; it too is placed in the synonymy of B. megalops. Selected anatomical observations of a specimen of B. calcarata suggest that Bajacalifornia is a relatively primitive alepocephalid. |
