Some Pliocene Fishes from Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska

Twenty species of fresh-water fishes are herein reported from High Plains Pliocene deposits. Thirteen of these forms are identified with modern species. Some are doubtfully so, simply because the specific characters are not present in disarticulated skeletal remains. Fundulus detillai, Chaenobryttus kansasensis, Ictalurus lambda, and Pomoxis lanei are listed from the literature only; I have not re-examined the type material. Notropis megalepis is described as new only because I cannot assign it to any Recent species. The present paucity of information on the osteology of the North American cyprinid fishes does not permit proper assessment of its relationships. The two ictalurid catfishes, Ictalurus sawrockensis and I. benderensis, seem to be allied to the Recent species natalis, and it is hoped that this relationship can be elucidated more precisely as Early Pleistocene material becomes available. At present their significance lies in the implication that considerable time separates the Sawrock local fauna from the Rexroad local fauna.
