|a The bothid Engyprosopon macrolepis, previously known from two male specimens from Cargados Carajos Shoals (Indian Ocean) and the Gulf of Aden, is recorded from the Comoro Islands, Red Sea, and Philippines. A juvenile from Natal is tentatively identified as this species. Engyprosopon macrolepis exhibits notable sexual dimorphism: the males have ocular flaps, rostral and orbital spines, a dark color pattern on the blind side, and a wider interorbital width and longer pectoral fin on the ocular side than females. The endemic Hawaiian E. xenandrus is the only other known congener in which males have ocular flaps. Engyprosopon macrolepis differs from this species in having lower gill-raker counts (6-8 vs 10-12 in E. xenandrus) and a longer pectoral fin on the ocular side (pectoral-fin length into head length 0.6-0.9 in males, 0.8-1.1 in females vs 1.4-1.5 in males, 1.3-1.4 in females).
