|a Three species of naked soles, Gymnachirus melas, G. texae, and G. nudus, are recognized. G. melas is known from the Atlantic coast of the United States from Massachusetts south to the Dry Tortugas, the Bahamas, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico; G. texae occurs in the Gulf of Mexico from off Cape San Blas, Florida, to the Bay of Campeche; G. nudus is known from Campeche, the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, and south to Ponta de Guaratiba, Brazil. There is a narrow area of overlap between G. melas and G. texae and between G. texae and G. nudus. The very similar species G. melas and G. nudus appear to be separated by the range of the most distinct form (G. texae). Differences between the species are tabulated. Complete synonymies and bibliography are given, together with ecological and biological notes on each species.
