Hybrids of Pitch Pine × Loblolly Pine, Pinus rigida × P. taeda, Studied in Maryland

520 |a Seven-year-old hybrids of Pinus rigida × P. taeda in southern and central Maryland grew either as rapidly as P. taeda or were intermediate between the slower growing P. rigida and the faster growing P. taeda. In Maryland's coldest section, Garrett County, the hybrids as well as P. rigida grew about 30 percent faster than P. taeda. Survival was outstanding in all geographic regions, and it was not different among the pines studied. The hybrids and P. rigida had significantly shorter leaves than P. taeda, and both were less susceptible to leaning caused by wet snow. No differences were observed among the pines studied in their susceptibility to injury by Ryacionia frustrana (Nantucket pine tip moth).
