Traditionally, the land was not enough to permit the interment of all dead and so the less important commoners were afforded a burial at sea. With the onset of Christianization everybody was afforded a burial on land, leading to cemeteries being erected at marginal locations, today often eroding into the sea. The article reviews the available information on prehistoric, traditional, and modern burial customs and discusses the implications of current population growth on the present and future burial needs of the Marshallese population.
