| Zusammenfassung: | In the Wind River Mountains of northwestern Wyoming forest communities dominated by aspen, Populus tremuloides, have been studied with respect to their successional status. A single stable aspen community has been recognized and is designated the Populus tremuloides-Symphoricarpos oreophilus association. Quantitative data for structure of tree populations, coverage, frequency and constancy of undergrowth species, soil profile descriptions, soil chemistry and topographic position have been given for 19 of 72 relatively undisturbed stands located during the study. Climax vegetation was the principal basis for recognition of an aspen habitat type, but site characteristics were also considered. Discussion of the relationship of this aspen association to other aspen forests in the Rocky Mountain Region is included.
