The differences and similarities provide a starting point for an analysis of Vidal’s satiric mode. It is further argued that the "public," both in the sense of "electorate" and in the sense of "audience," had an influence on Vidal's creative process beyond the merely thematic. Although it imposed restrictions that curtailed his authorial freedom in various ways, in effect it challenged him to find artistic solutions that are unique in his œuvre.
