Zusammenfassung:Mainly for editorial but also for historical purposes, the transmission of Vegetius's Epitoma rei militaris is surveyed from composition to the early 16th century. Over 200 manuscripts and six incunables are classified and large areas of the tradition shown to derive from extant sources. After general remarks on scribal use of more than one exemplar, drastic corrections made by Freculf of Lisieux serve as a guide through the extensive contamination, in which a heavily corrected and now defective manuscript, R, turns out to have played an important part; a lost descendant, best represented by late Italian manuscripts, supplemented the original text of R from a valuable source. New information is also given about translations made from 1270 to 1511.
