|a • Data from a large Swedish longitudinal observational study of T2DM patients. • Patients’ healthcare use and cost trajectory post insulin initiation are evaluated. • Initiation of insulin in T2DM patients was followed by increased healthcare costs. • The costs increased in primary, secondary outpatient as well as in hospital care. • The costs exceeded those seen in matched patients initiated on non-insulin drugs.
