|a • In patients with type 2 diabetes, cataracts and microalbuminuria are important markers of the presence of DMO. • Diabetic patients on glitazones, sulphonylureas, or insulin, show high risk of DMO. • High alcohol consumption increased almost three times the risk of DMO. • DMO risk with the HbA1c, systolic BP, cholesterol, and LDL high levels is confirmed. • Diuretics, smoking, obesity, or triglycerides inverse links with DMO merit research.
