|a La Grande Guerre inaugure les grands drames du xxe siècle. Accident de l'histoire, la Première Guerre mondiale détruit l'ordre bourgeois issu du xixe siècle, déstabilise la société européenne dans son ensemble, et peut-être plus particulièrement encore la société allemande, traumatisée par la défaite, la révolution de novembre 1918, la chute de la monarchie. Le Diktat de Versailles est alors très durement ressenti par les Allemands, persuadés d'avoir mené une guerre défensive pour l'existence de leur nation et convaincus, jusque dans les tout derniers mois de la guerre, que leurs troupes allaient vaincre l'ennemi. L'examen des répercussions de cette crise majeure permet de mieux comprendre comment la guerre ouvrit la voie - sans la rendre inévitable - à la tragédie du nazisme. Sans négliger les opérations militaires et la vie des soldats sur le front, l'auteur du présent ouvrage concentre ses analyses sur la société et l'économie de guerre, ainsi que sur ses conséquences sur l'esprit public et la vie politique allemande, préludes à la montée des extrêmes de l'après-guerre
