While a true “Fascist International” has never been established, European fascists shared common goals and sentiments as well as similar worldviews. They also drew on each other for support and motivation, even though relations among them were not free from misunderstandings and conflicts. Through a series of fascinating case studies, this expansive collection examines fascism’s transnational dimension, from the movements inspired by the early example of Fascist Italy to the international antifascist organizations that emerged in subsequent years. „Die Herausgeber betonen zu Recht, dass sich vergleichende und transnationale Studien zum Faschismus ergänzen müssen; nationalstaatliche Studien scheinen aber offenbar nur wenig Zukunftspotenzial zu besitzen - ein Urteil, das dem derzeitigen Trend in der Geschichtswissenschaft entspricht. Das Problem besteht allerdings darin, dass eine Schieflage in der Forschung zu den faschistischen Bewegungen Europas vorliegt - ein Befund, den die Herausgeber auf sprachliche Hürden zurückführen. Aber selbst ein Vergleich zwischen den Arbeiten zum "Dritten Reich" und dem faschistischen Italien offenbart eine klare Diskrepanz im Bereich der Grundlagenforschung wie der Veröffentlichung wissenschaftlicher Editionen wichtiger Egodokumente. Bis auf ganz wenige Ausnahmen sind publizierte Memoiren und Tagebücher führender Faschisten im Gegensatz zu Größen des NS-Regimes in einem erbärmlichen Zustand. Auch quellenfundierte und theoretisch-analytische Arbeiten über Protagonisten der faschistischen Epoche - sieht man von Mussolini ab - sucht man meist vergeblich. Diese Asymmetrie wird gerade in vergleichenden Studien oft zugunsten weitreichender Thesen nicht thematisiert. Diese Anmerkungen sollen weder die Qualität der Einzelbeiträge noch die Relevanz des Sammelbands an sich schmälern. Sie sollen zur Diskussion und zum Nachdenken anregen, da gerade widersprüchliche Ansichten, Kontroversen und Debatten einen Forschungsdiskurs erst beleben. Insgesamt entstand mit dem vorliegenden Band ein beeindruckendes Panorama über die transnationale Vernetzung faschistischer Gruppen in Europa, das nicht nur die Faschismusforschung bereichern wird, sondern auch für jeden historisch Interessierten einen fundierten Einblick in die Thematik bietet“ (sehepunkte.de)
