|a Die Zeit der weitreichenden antikommunistischen Repression in den USA zwischen 1947 und 1954, verkürzt als McCarthyism bekannt, ist bis heute ein bedeutsamer Bezugspunkt - sowohl in politischen Debatten wie innerhalb der Historiographie. Während ein erster Abschnitt des Beitrags einen Überblick zum McCarthyism gibt und dabei den Stellenwert von Denunziationen diskutiert, widmet sich ein zweiter Teil am Beispiel des Theater- und Filmregisseurs Elia Kazan konkret der Frage, wie Denunziationen in zeitgenössischen Debatten als liberale, staatsbürgerliche Akte gedeutet und gerechtfertigt wurden. Unter Bezugnahme auf Michel Foucaults Theorie der Gouvernementalität wird erkennbar, dass die zur patriotischen Tat umgedeutete Denunziation für den antikommunistischen Liberalismus nach 1945 die Funktion einer maßgeblichen Selbsttechnologie besaß.

|a The period of far-reaching anti-communism in the United States of America between 1947 and 1954, somewhat misleadingly known as McCarthyism, remains in the focus of both current political debates and historical scholarship. The first part of this article recounts the history of McCarthyism and emphasises how certain kinds of denuncia-tion, informing the authorities about the political past of former friends and comrades, ensured its implementation. The second part focuses on the film director Elia Kazan and demonstrates how vindications of self-confessed informers served to present ‘betrayals’ as truly liberal and patriotic acts. Applying Michel Foucault’s theory of ‘governmentality’, the article argues that the reinterpretation of denunciation as an expression of patriotism served as an important ‘technology of the self’ for postwar liberal anti-communism.
