|a Henry Ford gilt als ein Symbol der Moderne – er gab einer kapitalistischen Wirtschaftsform, dem Fordismus, den Namen. Fords Prominenz ist nicht zuletzt auf zwei Bücher zurückzuführen, die nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg unter seinem Namen erschienen und breit rezipiert wurden: „Der internationale Jude“ sowie „Mein Leben und Werk“. Beide Bücher verdanken sich Fords politischem Ehrgeiz und wurden als Vorschläge zur Gesellschaftsreform diskutiert. Ein Kernelement des Ford’schen Programms war massiver Antisemitismus: Erst eine auf der Betriebsgemeinschaft aufgebaute Gesellschaft ohne Händler, Bankiers und Intellektuelle – die mit Juden gleichgesetzt wurden – könne gerecht sein. Die Rezeption dieser Gesellschaftsvision in deutschsprachigen Zeitschriften der 1920er-Jahre legt die breite Akzeptanz von Antisemitismus und autoritären Strukturen offen. Während Ford seinen Antisemitismus nie verbarg, wird er auch in der seit 1945 geführten Diskussion über Fordismus nur als „Autokönig“ gesehen.

|a Henry Ford is a symbol of modernity. His name became synonymous with a capitalist economic system called ‘Fordism’. Ford’s fame results not least from two books published in his name after the First World War, The international Jew and My Life and Work. Both books were widely acclaimed and, since they reflect Ford’s political ambitions, they were understood in terms of a social reform programme. A central element of this programme was a strong antisemitism. Ford claimed that a fair and just society depended upon the duplication of the unanimous unity of the company and the elimination of merchants, bankers, and intellectuals (who were simply seen as Jews). The attention given to this social vision in German journals in the 1920s shows how a large part of the population was ready to accept antisemitism and authoritarian structures. While Ford never concealed his antisemitism, he has consistently been perceived as the ‘flivver king’. Even debates on Fordism since 1945 have completely disregarded his antisemitism.
