520 |a "... that they forget Christian and Brotherly Love in equal measure ...": Religious War in the Early Modern Period. - Germany's confessional wars in the Early Modern Period do not fit the patterns of "religious wars" or even "holy wars" that have been established in the sociological war debates since 11 September 2001. This thesis is based on four observations: 1. Lutheran teaching about the "Two Realms" amounted to an adaption and advancement of medieval "just war" theories, not a disruption; 2. on the other hand, in patriarchal German territories integrated within the state order of the Holy Roman Empire, a phenomenon of downplaying the notion of religious war (as justification for violence) was prevalent in both the Catholic and Protestant churches; 3. sermons and rituals propagated religious warfare only as a part of the ruler's sovereignty and authority; 4. instead, the justification and nationalization (Verstaatlichung) of war drew on post-confessional theories of state, on debates of natural rights, and - during the 18th century - on the Enlightenment. Finally, an overview of Christian war theories in the wake of modern war ideologies shows a significant change: during the "Cabinet Wars" of the 18th century, militaries were increasingly nationalized. As a result of this process, rulers' authority for interpreting religious aspects of war grew, while at the same time, the justification and nationalization of war was beset by radicalizing forms of political awareness: concepts and myths about "the people" and "the nation" (Volk und Nation).
