Dreieinhalb Jahre lang befehligte Rudolf Höß dieses größte Vernichtungslager des "Dritten Reichs" und setzte als Himmlers Helfer die geplante "Endlösung der Judenfrage" um: Ab 1942 begann er mit der systematischen Ermordung von Menschen mit dem Giftgas Zyklon B und rühmte sich, Giftgas sei eine "vernünftige" und "hygienische" Verbesserung des Massenmordes. Höß war autoritätshörig, ehrsüchtig und seelisch abgestumpft. Er gehorchte Befehlen blind und bedingungslos, Unrechtsbewusstsein war ihm fremd. Seine Dienstbeflissenheit bei der Erteilung und Ausführung der unmenschlichen Befehle kontrastiert mit seiner Selbstwahrnehmung in seinen "Autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen", in denen er sich als durchaus sensiblen Menschen beschreibt. Nach Kriegsende wurde Höß vom Obersten Polnischen Volksgericht zum Tode verurteilt und im April 1947 vor seiner früheren Dienstvilla auf dem Lagergelände von Auschwitz erhängt. Dieses Buch korrigiert eine Vielzahl von Lebenslügen des KZ-Kommandanten. „Lebensumstände und Biographie von Rudolf Höß handelt Koop auf wenigen Seiten ab, auf denen die interessantesten Details sicherlich in der Mitgliedschaft von Höß bei den Artamanen zu suchen sind. In diesem Kontext ist auch die Bekanntschaft zu Heinrich Himmler entstanden, dem wohl bekanntesten Mitglied der Artamanen. Des Weiteren fällt vor allem Koops Bemühen auf, sich mit den „Fehlern“ und Ungenauigkeiten in Höß‘ „Aufzeichnungen“ auseinanderzusetzen. Dabei wird dem Leser nicht klar, was Zweck dieser Bestrebungen ist. Will Koop Höß der unrichtigen Aussagen überführen? Angesichts von Höß’ fehlendem Schuldbewusstsein und seinem stoischen Beharren auf seiner „Rädchen im Getriebe“-Funktion wären solche Enthüllungen eigentlich sekundär, vor allem aber für den Leser der Monographie uninteressant. Und hier wird die Schwäche von Koops Monographie deutlich: Koop verliert sich in die Widerlegung von Details und scheint keinen Plan der „Erkenntnis“ zu haben“ (literaturkritik.de)
